2011 Modesto Masters at Mc Henry Bowl VICTORY for GREGORY” Gregory Thompson, Jr. from Belmont won the Winner’s bracket again this year and did not want to have a repeat of last year in the title match. He would have to bowl his best as the local favorite, Myles Duty, was on his game winning the Loser’s bracket and anxiously waiting for the chance to defeat Gregory twice for the title. Myles had lost to Gregory earlier as the two bowled each other to decide the winner of the Winner’s bracket. Now he would have another opportunity to defeat Gregory but would have to win two consecutive matches to claim the title. However, Gregory had plans of his own and did not want to see a repeat of last year as he was the winner of the Winner’s bracket and lost twice to Sal Bruno squandering his first opportunity at the Modesto Masters Championship. This year his plans came through and he bowled as he needed to and defeated Myles 497-409 and emerged victorious winning all his matches and the first place prize of $3,030.00 for the 15th Annual Brunswick Modesto Masters tournament. This tournament is co-sponsored by Don’s Masonry, Cal-West Roofing, Al’s Appliance, McHenry Bowl, Yosemite Lanes and the Modesto USBC Association. Gregory qualified 7th on Saturday April 2, 2011 with a seven game score of 1,734 a 247.7 average. Myles qualified 8th with a score of 1,717 a 245.2 average. Myles had to hold off another local favorite, Wayne Garber qualifying 15th (241.7avg), as the two battled for the winner of the Loser’s bracket and a chance to meet Gregory for the championship. Myles was up by 25 pins after game one of the two-game match, but in the second game Wayne was on a mission and for a while it looked like it was going to be a championship match between two PBA Regional Champions – Gregory and Wayne. But Myles had his own plans and needed a good tenth frame of the 2nd game in his match against Wayne and came through in the clutch and defeated Wayne by a score of 491 to 481. Myles bowled well all day and received $1,588 for his efforts. Wayne received $895.00 for 3rd place and finishing out the top four was Jason Tehee from Fresno for $665. We had a three way tie for the last spot of match play but no tiebreaker roll-off was needed as the three-way tie was for the 22nd through 24th seeds. The three players (Ross Packard of San Jose, Bob Rosenau of Redding and Joe Petrovich of Tracy) each rolled 1657 (236.7avg) for the last spots of match play. Our number one qualifier was Jason Tehee with a score of 1815 (259.2 avg.) Local bowlers competing in match play were Steve Davis of Manteca, Brandon Bates of Modesto, Myles Duty of Modesto, Christopher Davidson of Modesto, Stephany Perry of Turlock, Wayne Garber of Modesto, Jim Gauthier of Salida and Jason Walton of Turlock. Steve qualified 3rd with 1750 (250 avg.) won 1 match, received a $50 bonus for qualifying in the top 8 and finished in the round of 9th-12th for total prize money of $330.00. Brandon qualified 6th with 1737 (248.1 avg.) won 2 matches, received a $50 bonus for qualifying in the top 8 and finished in the round of 5th -6th for total prize money of $460.00. Christopher qualified 10th with 1706 (243.7 avg.) won 2 matches and finished in the round of 13th-16th for total prize money of $285. Stephany qualified 11th with 1701 (243 avg.) won 3 matches and finished in the round of 9th -12th for total prize money of $340.00. Wayne qualified with 1692 (241.7 avg.) won 6 matches and finished 3rd. Jim qualified 17th with 1678 (239.7 avg.) won 4 matches and finished in the round of 7th-8th for prize money of $420.00. Jason qualified 21st with 1666 (238 avg.) won 3 matches and finished in the round of 5th-6th for total prize money of $440.00. With the strength of a 289 and 279 game Jason Tehee was our number one qualifier, as mentioned above. It took a seven game score of 1657 (a 236.7 avg.) to make the top 24 for match play on Sunday and 1637 or a 233.8 average to receive the final check from the main prize fund. Local bowlers grabbed 8 of the 27 checks. For the second year in a row a new incentive was in place for the top local league bowler out of the cash from the main prize fund. Jason Dewar of Modesto received that award of $120. In addition, there was a $10 optional insurance pool for bowlers the age of 45 and over. It paid out 3 spots this year. Bowlers receiving money from the insurance pool were Bill Nichols of Roseville $80 with a score of 1835, Dave Jenkins of Sacramento with a score of 1627 and a tie for 3rd Ty Dawson of Sunnyvale $45 with a score of 1624 and Gary Lee of Stockton $45 with a score of 1624. This was the 6th year bowlers 45 and over who could put up $10 in addition to the standard entry fee for insurance. It pays 1 spot for every 8 entries for the “insurance” bowlers not earning a check in the main prize fund. There were a total of 25 eligible bowlers opting to pay the extra amount for “insurance”. This year there were a total of 107 entries coming from all parts of Northern and Southern California, Georgia, Pennsylvania and Iowa. Total sponsorships from Brunswick and the local businesses exceeded $4,000. Based on the number of entries, $5 from each entry or $535 was donated to the Modesto USBC’s Hall of Fame Scholarship Fund benefiting graduating high school seniors in furthering their education. There were many high scores and 3 game series on Saturday and Sunday. They included 4-300’s, 2-299’s and 2-800’s. The 300 games on Saturday were bowled by Nick Wharton of Manteca, Jim Gauthier of Salida and in match play on Sunday Greg Thompson, Jr. and Stephany Perry. The 800’s on Saturday were rolled by Jason Tehee (805) and Dave Rubin of Castro Valley (816). The 299’s were bowled by Paul Herrera of San Jose and Aaron Pawloski of Brentwood. Congratulations to all the bowlers who cashed and thank you to all bowlers who participated. Special thanks go out to Jason Guest and Nick Smith from Brunswick, Ric Hamlin from Steve Cook’s Bowling Supply and to all of our local sponsors. A special thanks to Tim Miller for his excellent coordination of the Brunswick ball raffles and to all of the helpers who worked the tournament and the ball raffles. To date we have had no back-to-back champions or multiple champions in the 15 years of the tournament. Who will be the first? Next year’s tournament will be held on March 31 and April 1, 2012.
